The Archos 9 PC Tablet. |
The optical trackpoint and integrated mouse buttons make it a breeze to navigate the Archos 9 (see larger image). |
The adjustable leg stand allows the Archos 9 to be positioned to suit a range of uses. | Designed for easy portability, the Archos 9 weighs less than 2 pounds and measures 0.67 inches thin. The Archos 9 sports a full touch-sensitive 9-inch resistive touchscreen display with a virtual keyboard as well as an innovative optical trackpoint (virtual mouse) for easy navigation. An adjustable leg stand allows the Archos 9 to be positioned in a number of positions--upright for watching videos or photo slideshows, or angled for an optimal typing position. You'll also enjoy brilliant video playback on the Archos 9 thanks to the gorgeous widescreen, LED-backlit display, which provides a full HD 1080p resolution. And you can set up video conferences (using the 1.3-megapixel webcam), chat with friends and surf the web on the go via the integrated 54g Wi-Fi networking (or tether to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth and surf via cellular connectivity; additional charges applicable). Other features include a 60 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM, built-in speakers, and up to 5 hours of battery life. Smart Features for Intuitive Use The ARCHOS 9's controls are ergonomically placed for comfortable and natural use. - On the right, an optical trackpoint for finger navigation replaces the big touchpad of a laptop to ensure you can precisely point to any position on your screen.
- On the left, screen brightness, Wi-Fi control, and left/right mouse buttons complement the virtual keyboard, so that your regular mouse controls aren't left aside.
When you want smart info that pops-up under web links or need to right click on something, it's just as easy as on a PC. That's just one of the many differences from earlier tablet computers. Designed for Portability The Archos 9's form and design breaks the rules of the conventional laptop design. Its edges fan out from an already thin structure (0.67 inches or 17 mm at its thickest). And since it weighs less than 29 ounces, you can easily carry it with you in your handbag or backpack and use it any time. It also features a two-position leg-stand that best positions the device depending on how you are using it: - The upper position is best for viewing videos on the go, surfing the web, or reading
- The lower position is ideal when you need to type memos or web addresses, send an email, or chat with your friends.

Worked as expected August 18, 2010 MyPenName (Pennsylvania) The Archos 9 worked as I had expected it to. The setup was easy, the display was nice, bright and clear and big enough for most tasks. Pages loaded quickly enough and it doesn't come loaded with tons of bloatware. I have been using it for quite a while now with no issues or real complaints. It does what it is meant to do - give you internet on the go for checking emails and light websurfing. It is not meant to use as a primary computer, unless all you do is check email etc .. you won't be dowmloading all kinds of programs and apps to this nor downloading iTunes and tons of music and videos... it just doesn't have the HD or memory for it. I like it for it's intended purpose, but I do prefer a larger screen and an easier way of typing, so for me, my smartphone is just as good since it has a full qwery that I can type on. I just personally do not like the way you input text on the Archos or the navigation so much either. That is a personal oreference though and not an issue with the device itself. I do like it in a pinch, but it is not a preferred gadget of mine.
Horrible. Don't Buy it August 9, 2010 K. Gile 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My husband and I had bought this and read some of the bad reviews. The purpose of getting it was for him to read some downloaded books for his EdD program. The Intel Atom is a SLOW processor especially when coupled with Windows Starter. The operating system that you need to have if you want to truly have a good touch screen interface is Home Premium or Professional, which the Atom cannot handle. The mouse for this, which is meant to be used as a back up to the touch, was awkward and hard to get used to. We had no problem with the fact that it was slow, but using the mouse and/or touchscreen was HORRIBLE. My husband tried to get by using it for a week and we decided that it was in no WAY worth the money they are charging for it. If it was only about $200, it might be worth the hassle. Hold out for all the new slates that will be headed out soon and don't waste your money on this machine.
Slow, very slow. August 2, 2010 Domingo Daher (Paraguay, South America) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bad. The operating system is Windows 7 Starter Edition, however in the BIOS of the ARCHOS says clearly that supports only Windows 98, 2000 and XP.
It is a kind of scam.
As a result it is extremely slow.
The recommended is to install a version of Windows XP and it works more fast.

Ok, but underpowered July 28, 2010 James E. Hill (ma) The Archos 9 is a well built little pad with a good solid feel but it has a horse power problem. It just feels sluggish. It seams to struggle along running Windows 7. Ive heard you can get Windows XP to run on it but the video playback suffers (no idea why). Its touch screen is ok but they should have included a decent hand writing recognition program to take full advantage of it. Over all a very well built device that needs a bit more processor power and some custom software to take better advantage of the touch screen.
ARCHOS 9 Product Information is Lying (updated) July 14, 2010 Datagod (Mountain View, CA USA) 11 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is an updated review. Apparently, this review is not showing with all the others, and strangely, the weblink proving my case has been deleted--suggesting to what depth the merchants are willing to go to hide the truth, and give people the best chance possible to belief the false specifications they are showing, and buy it anyway.
The resolution on this device is 1024x600, not 1080p HD (1920x1080 progressive). I quote from above, "widescreen, LED-backlit display, which provides a full HD 1080p resolution."
This is false information, as is clearly described in the specifications on Archos' website: [...]
Even worse, Archos Corp. is also the merchant here, which means they DELIBERATELY lied about the specifications. See, they know that most people will trust what they read in the product description, and will be easily duped by the fact that it will PLAY a 1080p--thinking that this means the display is a 1080p resolution. From this, the company who wrote this deliberately lies about the specifications, with full intent to deceive their customers--gambling on them being to stupid to be able to discover it until they're already sold.
I'm really sick of this trend. Electronics companies are carrying on a trend of exploiting customers' lack of knowledge, instead of supporting them. This is a dangerous precedent to allow. Let's make it cost them something to lie to us.
I challenge all customers, when they see merchants who deliberately deceive customers regarding product specifications, to not only refuse to buy the product, but to boycott the company entirely, permanently, and place a statement to that effect online for the world to see--as I am doing.
The upper 1% are playing us for idiots and using technology to exploit our lack of knowledge, instead of doing their jobs. Let's use our ability to post to fight back. Let's make them pay, and let the world know their names. If we don't, they'll just get so powerful by lying to us our economy will collapse and we'll all end up getting our houses foreclosed on.
