Nice computer! August 8, 2010 M. Richardson (New Mexico) I ordered a brand new HP from the on line HP store last year, got a lemon, sent it back within the 3 week review period. I was lucky to do that, after reading support messages from people who were stuck with that buggy computer. I really liked the setup, though, and thought surely they fixed the bugs in a similar (not exact) refurb model. So I decided to take a chance again with HP. It turns out that this computer works well, and does what it says it will do, and has been very smooth going. My best advice is to put computers through their paces right away and send back the ones that have odd behavior from the beginning. This refurb model is a nice one, and I am very pleased with it. I can recommend it.
GONE ARE THE DAYS May 21, 2010 Anthony Elrod (seattle, washington USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Instead of a review, I'm including an abridged version of a letter I sent to Mr Mark Hurd, the President of Hewlett Packard
Dear Mr. Hurd, On April 27 at 2 PM I received a Pavilion Elite Desktop that was defective and "dead in the box." I've been buying computers since 1992 and can accept this but not what followed. (Repair Order #803.........)
From 6 PM to midnight I talked to people in India whose English was barely intelligible making the process extremely difficult. They had me doing tests over and over and sitting on endless hold in between. This was incompetence. Around midnight I was asked to do a "System Restore?" and told by your Tech he would call back---he never did and I was to find that this is common.
On April 28, convinced that the problem was beyond the abilities of your offshore people and not wanting to go back to people I couldn't understand, who never called me back, and who put me on endless hold; I requested (per your guarantee) someone to make a housecall here in Seattle, which was denied. I tried to access American support to no avail and ended up calling Sales--at least they spoke English. They essentially told me "I was on my own" and I thought of the phrase--"Abandon hope all ye who enter here"
On April 29 I got your Filipino station and repeated the same process for hours. One particularly grating aspect was listening ad nausea to your parroted message about being able to get home service while I languished on endless hold. This is deceptive and a rotten lie. My machine was brand new----a fact that wasn't even noticed by your techs until the third day. After 20 hrs of my personal time had been chewed up, the dead machine was finally pronounced unfit and carted back by FedEx on April 30.
On May 1, in one final exhaustive attempt to throw salt in my wounds, I received an email double charging me, and my Visa card was billed an extra $50 to boot. Come on Mr. Hurd, you are a great big Fortune 500 company, how hard is it to fix these things.....things I would expect if this was a David Packard startup in his Palo Alto garage. Best Regards A---- E----
Post Script---Yes there is a post script to all this. Hewlett-Packard again sent me a brand new machine---machine #2. After the initial setup, I couldn't get on the Internet. Once again I called your techs in India (Repair order #------858----). After about 5 hours, including a "face to face" and the usual endless tests, I went to bed. Since I wasn't willing to spend another 20 hours on the phone I sent the machine back for a refund. Two bad machines in a row strains the credulity and the bounds of coincidence, but your people were merely sanguine about it all.
The original deal was that I gave HP a price they advertised and they gave me an operational Core i7 machine or they would come out and do an in-house repair. I felt cheated. I got my money back but lost 25+hours of my personal time. Hewlett Packard is a good example of a giant global faceless octopus of a company with ubiquitous advertising, cheap prices and shoddy rubbish products. One of the sales guys told me that if HP used American techs it would add $400 to each machine----so that's why Apples cost more?! Believe me Mr. Hurd, gone are the days I'll do business with HP again.
Worst purchase ever... March 27, 2010 Dean A. Brumbaugh (Dallas, TX) 1 out of 9 found this review helpful
Outside of buying a dot com stock in 2000 or choosing beta over VHS, this has to be the worst investment I ever made. I have had many years of excellent success with HP products, and I don't hear enough bad news about Windows 7 to assume Microsoft is the problem. I point the finger (the middle one) at AMD and their useless Phenom II X4 chip. I think it should have been spelled Fee-Nom as an acronym for paying a high fee for very nominal computation capability. I expected much faster speed than I had with my Intel Duo-Core HP unit. What I got with this x4 AMD model was a computer that goes into a coma every day I use it. I download lots of photos from friends, family, and websites of places I would like to travel, and the computer icon simply falls into some kind of tailspin, giving no indication of when it will "release" itself back to you so that you can go into your next task. Sometimes it may be for only 30 seconds, but at times it has gone on for FIVE minutes or more. It is so ridiculous that sometimes while typing at high speed alone has set it off, and when it does, not even a Ctrl+Alt+Del will stop the coma. Nor will attempting to shut down the computer via the Windows start icon. Minutes later, the words on the screen finally catch up to what you entered on your keyboard earlier. The only way to regain control is to completely cut off the power and then reboot. I will never, ever, ever buy a computer with an AMD chip again. And shame on you HP either poor QA or for not fully testing the chips you put in your units. Your past history is the only reason you have not alienated me completely for the future. As they say, once bitten, twice shy. So get it right going forward HP. FYI, I buy a new desktop every two years and my company provides a new Dell laptop every three years, so I have seen a lot of computers in my time, and the P6230f is the worst I have ever encountered since I bought my first IBM PC in 1982.
Outstanding Computer! March 7, 2010 Daniel Major (Atlanta, GA USA) I am a web designer who is constantly on the computer. Upgrading from an old one with Vista, to this computer has been and will be a tremendous help to my business and sanity. I was contemplating building my own computer, but needed the price to be right at $500. This one was a miracle find, with 8 gigs of DDR3 memory being a huge bonus. Windows 7 is a dream come true, finally, and this model handles it perfectly. There were a lot of bonuses that I will leave you to find, but one that stands out is how quiet it actually runs. Whisper soft!
I bought mine refurbished from [...] through Amazon Marketplace. Got the expedited shipping which was a bit more expensive, but I ordered at 5pm on Tuesday, and the computer arrived at 7pm on Thursday. Much earlier than I expected! Also the tower itself was in perfect condition, was only thing I was nervous about since the computer is refurbished. However it looks brand new, so I'm definitely happy about that. I'm knocking on wood for all these since I've only had it for a few days, I might update in about 6 months or so. But for the price, you can't go wrong with this refurbished model! I'm definitely a very satisfied customer!
