Expensive ... Not worth it. August 6, 2010 Oscar Chavez (New York / Pennsylvania) I purchased this Office-PC
Total Before Tax: $304.87
I paid $304.87 for this " PC "
It arrived on time(thanks UPS)
What it came on the box?
- Dell GX:
* It says "4G`s ram " But it is only 3G`s(2.99)
* DVD rom??? Not even reads CD`s or DVD`s.
* It came with an " original " XP version.
* VIDEO CARD <-- Wait, no video card? Oh my ... NO WAY !
- One cheap-mouse. (USB , not wireless)
- One cheap-keyboard ( hard to type )(USB , not wireless)
- One set of cheap-speakers.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Still wondering if it is a good price?
Let me just give you the PARTS this PC will need in order to be a TRUE-DELL PC.
It will need a video card. PCI 'e'. Which cost like $50+.
Look at this video card --> EVGA 01G-P3-N945-LR GeForce 9400 GT 1GB DDR2 PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card
It will need a CD Rom. Which will cost like $50 - $80
Look at this Cd roms --> Oh wait, there is none in stock. try maybe a portable CD/DVD rom Targus DVD-ROM External USB 2.0 Drive ADV01US (Piano Black)
Did I mentioned it needs more ram?
It says 4G`s ram, but it only has 3g`s? :o
Note:
*It runs web-browsing nicely.Watch videos on youtube? Can`t go beyond 720p.
*USB-flash driver? It will take a while for this PC to read your files stored in a flash-drive :/
Pros:
None
COns:
DO NOT BUY IT.
great machine July 28, 2010 Tone so far the hardware is wonderful...perfect keyboard.. i love the LED lights for the media player buttons. the mouse is also on point. The tower itself is great. I have not had a chance to burn a dvd yet but so far everything is running fine. I had no issues with upgrading from xp to windows 7. Thumbs up on the product
Caveat Emptor - Let the buyer beware! July 27, 2010 Wes Prang On paper, this looks like a GREAT computer. Fast, HUGE hard drive, nice amount of RAM, DVD Burner. At an incredible price.
There's a reason it's so cheap. It almost never plays DVD's. And it's filled with cheap components.
Mine dropped dead after a mere 14 months. They told me it would cost more to fix than the computer is worth. Now I'm using an even cheaper computer (I'm VERY poor, which is why I bought this one in the first place) until I save up my money to have one custom built for me.
And that's what I recommend everyone else do. Don't buy this computer. Go to a computer repair shop, tell them what you use a computer for, and let them build one for you, to your specifications.
This computer looks like a GREAT deal. It's not. It's JUNK!
Good computer June 2, 2010 Suzanne L. Smith This has been a good refurbished computer so far. It came with a DVD drive that did not function. We used one of our technology people to fix it - it was unplugged/unconnected inside the computer, for some reason. Otherwise, we felt we received good value in this purchase.
It's now 2010 and dual core + 4gb RAM may be minimum requirements by 2015 May 3, 2010 Krystof (New England) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've seen new quad-cores at Staples for $500 and mailorder is always chancey but this $300 Optimus is worth considering for these reasons:
1. "If" Microsoft were creating rational new OS's and "then" more software makers would be bothering to keep up with the latest OS and "then" I would not be suggesting a used computer for more than half the price of a new computer--but that's not the way things are.
2. Even though there are substantial complaints bringing the average rating of this Dell Optimus down to 3 stars, please note that the vast majority give an unequivocal 5 stars.
3. Many of the complaints seem to be about under-performing graphics. Well maybe so. I don't do much graphics. But my unit, at least, did include monitor rotation video card, which in my world is as "advanced" for graphics as I could desire.
(If this feature appeals to you, then I suggest you telephone A Computer for Everybody to make sure yours will have it. If so, it is done by a right-click to the desktop--Graphics Options--Rotation. However I suggest to avoid rotating a widescreen monitor sideways--resulting in a "very tall" monitor--which is somehow devastating to the eyes, in my experience.)
4. Sure with any mailorder computer, new or used, you must trust the seller and be prepared to return it if not working. Currently the seller is A Computer for Everybody who seems to be a major player with their own website and that specializes in the Dell Optimus. Some reviewers here complain about poor response to complaints but others report no problem with returns. If by chance they equivocate about a refund then you can also complain to Amazon.
5. I am not an expert, just my opinion, but the way things go historically, by 2015 you may regret having any computer that has less than dual core and 4gb ram.
I am not gungho on used computers. For most people I would suggest a new $500 quad core at Staples or Best Buy. You probably can even retrograde to XP if you like.
But "if" you want a used computer, and don't need fancy graphics, seems to me this is the one to try.
This used Optimus is especially attractive for people who still have a workable primary computer and need a second computer. This was my situation. I wanted a secondary computer which had the same XP OS as my old computer. My choices were a new computer for $500 or a used single-core computer just like my old one for $200 or this one for $300. This has worked out better than expected and is twice as powerful as my primary computer.
By the way, in case you don't know, "dual core" is supposedly like stringing up 2 computers to double the speed. So 3ghz with dual core is like 6ghz. "Hyperthreading" supposedly adds yet another unit. So supposedly, this Optimus is like having a 9ghz processor. Or at least that's what I have heard from my friends.
Also, a little history we all know. A few years ago, 500mb RAM was excellent and 1 gb RAM was fantastic. Today, I have upgraded my primary computer to its maximum of 2 gb RAM and often it is just getting by. So, if buying any kind of computer today, don't settle for anything less than dual core + 4 gb RAM. Then and only then, in my little opinion, do you have a good chance to find it happily usable for ten years or maybe more.
P.S.
--Yes, of course, the free keyboard, free speakers and free mouse are as cheesy as they come.
--Some reviewers say their Optimus is terribly slow. Maybe they got a lemon. But if this happens to you, before giving up, at least try defragmenting the hard drive.
--My standard advice. Any time you buy any computer, new or used, as soon as you determine that it works acceptably, clone the hard drive! Ultimate protection from viruses or physical breakdown. Maxtor/Seagate provides a free DOS program that will create a bootable clone. Then to be sure, use the copy not the original. I am still working out the details. I cloned my main computer using the Maxtor "maxblast" non-DOS. The copy works fine except I must press F1 with each startup. Supposedly the DOS version does not have this shortcoming. You can also take it to Staples to clone for $100 plus the cost of the new drive.
This also might resolve a concern of the reviewer just before me, who seems to know something, and who says, "...the hard drives in most Dell machines I have used are cheap, unreliable and need constant maintenance..."
--By the way, the current best value in drives seems to be the Seagate 500 gb (1/2 terrabyte) for about $55 at Amazon. Smaller ones aren't much cheaper, and anything bigger is twice as expensive and more likely to have problems. Also 500 gb is likely to be plenty of space for plenty of years, in my little opinion.
