5 out of 5 stars Replace Seagate, no issues   August 31, 2010
M. V. Damiano
To date, 3 of the 4 original Seagate drives have failed in my NetGear NAS. Thankfully one at a time. I have replaced them all with 500GB Western Digital drives. Been months since original failure and weeks since the last one. So far no issues. Time will tell. The original Seagate drives lasted over a year or so before they failed with clicking noises. If this drive fails, I will be sure to update review.

5 out of 5 stars WD   August 27, 2010

Western Digital hard drives have been the best on the market. From my first computer as a wee tyke to my slogging work horse of today, I've always selected WD drives and have never been disapointed.

1 out of 5 stars Dead after 6 months, perhaps due to bulk handling   August 24, 2010
S. Chia
I bought this drive in December 2009 because of the many positive reviews, and it completely failed after 6 months of minor use. The Western Digital diagnostic tool revealed that there were so many media errors that it could not continue. Chkdsk listed thousands of read failures before I gave up and sent it for RMA.

The RMA instructions on the WD site listed detailed packing instructions, and it occurred to me that the problem might be how these bulk drives are handled once they arrive at Amazon's warehouse. They probably arrive from WD, properly packed and padded. Once there however, it could be anyone unpacking these drives and simply throwing each onto a shelf. Then an order comes in and someone else picks these up, throws each into an Amazon box with a few bubble pillows, something the RMA instruction specifically say would void your warranty.

Imagine the thrashing as the drive goes through the conveyor belts, the journey on the various trucks, the loading and unloading, and the final thud as it lands on your door step.

No wonder there are so many positive reviews, together with the numerous incidents of the drive failing after just a few months. And this seems to be same with other brands.

Perhaps that's why Seagate has a 5 year warranty of their retail drive but a 3 year warranty on the same bulk drive.

Amazon should learn how to pack the drives from the WD RMA instructions!

1 out of 5 stars What has happened to Western Digital?   August 23, 2010
Peter Beaman
I purchased the Western Digital WD TV Live in the new year it worked great apart from over heating and shutting down halfway thorough the movie.

So I purchased the Western Digital My Book World Edition II 1TB to move all my movies and music off two 500Gb USB drives attached thinking that would allow it to run cooler, well 4 days after moving the movies and music, My Book World crashed, oh what joy!.

So I purchased Western Digital 1 TB Caviar hard drive to recover all my movies and music which was over 700Mb. I spent the weekend and finally got them all and this morning the Western Digital 1 TB Caviar hard drive crashed with the heads making not so happy noises.

I give up with Western Digital products now, 25 years in the IT biz and never had a problem with their products, now 3 losses back to back.

I AM NOT PLEASED!!!
