5 out of 5 stars Good packaging..so far so good   September 9, 2010
Gregory Lee (Gilbert, AZ USA)
Was apprehensive about this purchase due to other reviewers' negative comments on packaging. I purchased 2 drives in the same transaction early Sept 2010. Arrived as 1 box with typical airbags inside to prevent shifting. Within this box were 2 smaller boxes. Each smaller box contained an individual drive suspended with end caps that isolate all drive surfaces from the box and provide some shock protection. This was as good or better packaging than I have seen from most other shippers. If I had ordered only one drive and it came in one of the smaller boxes with end caps, without the other box with air bag, I think this still would've been perfectly adequate.

Packaging aside - I've had some serious performance issues with WD Green drives on the Mac - perhaps due to frequent spin-up / spin-down cycles - resulting in frequent waits of 5 sec or more while the drive spins up. So far the Black drives seem to work just fine. Nice and quiet too.

Seems like Amazon mixes reviews for diff models so to clarify this review is for WD2001FASS (2TB Caviar Black 64MB buffer) drives that were on sale early Sept 2010 for $140 ea.

5 out of 5 stars A No-Problems-So-Far Review   September 5, 2010
Pileated (CT, USA)
I've done some video editing with the month-old rebuilt system this drive is in, so it has had some intensive use with no problems. To my unsophisticated awareness of such things hard drives of every brand all work about the same until they don't work at all, which happens at least a year down the road if it does happen. I've had WD drives croak this way, without warning, but I've had Seagates and Maxtors go too. The WD5001 worked out of the box (well, the OEM wrapper), set up Windows 7 without a hiccup, and is a nice chunk of storage for a nice price. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars WD 2TB SATA Drives for Drobo FS   September 2, 2010
David Elliott (Martinez, CA United States)
Drives live up to their manufacturer's specification. I am pleased with them. They are the first 2 Drives installed in a Drobo FS. Installation went effortlessly. The drives are connected across a network and perform according to their specifications.

5 out of 5 stars Works Fine   September 1, 2010
Bruce638 (Grand Blanc, MI USA)
I had previously bought the 1 TB version of the Caviar Black drive as a backup drive and had no problems with it. As a result I wanted the same type of drive as the primary for the new computer that I built. Amazon had a good price and availability on the 500 GB unit. Thus far (about two months) there have been no problems, and I am very satisfied.

Installation in the new computer proceeded without problems. This drive is quieter than the previously purchased 1 TB unit which I am nnow using as the back-up in the new computer.

5 out of 5 stars A year later, still going strong   August 28, 2010
William Sullivan (Austin, TX)
I added a couple of these to my Mac Pro and a year later they're still going strong. Installation was super easy (basically, just slide them into an empty hard drive slot) and they've been storing data without any complaints.
