Difficult to install March 7, 2010 Rodney Blake (Gainesville, FL) I bought two of these to install in a RAID configuration. When I loaded Windows XP, the OS didn't recognize the array and the software packaged with the drives wouldn't run because it said there wasn't a seagate or maxtor drive installed in my system. I bought the extra software from Acronis, but it still didn't recognize the new array. One of the drives in the old array (the maxtor) failed while I was using the Acronis software to copy an image to my external backup array. Finally, I was able to get the new array to work by using the utilities from a Western Digital drive (the one that survived the backup operation) that I installed two years ago. I'm going to buy western digital drives exclusively from now on.
Bad drive - wouldn't format completely- returned it and bought a SamSung March 7, 2010 Dr. Moebius (Milky Way) Frustrated. Returned the drive after repeatedly unable to format drive in a Windows Vista PC. Formatting hung at 73% complete two times in a row. Seagate diagnostic software could not find a problem. Should of read the many other unsatisfied reviews on Amazon before purchasing this Seagate. Returned the Seagate Barracuda to Amazon and purchased a Samsung 1Tb SATA, formatted it without a hitch and it works without an issue.
Stephen March 3, 2010 Stephen Gestwicki (DE USA) The drive worked as expected. I was very happy to find out that it shipped with the latest firmware that is necessary to keep the drive from failing. Because of the seriousness of the firmware issue I still strongly suggest everyone make sure that their drives have the latest firmware from Seagate on these Barracuda hard drives.
Works just fine March 2, 2010 Michael L. Jones (San Diego, CA USA) This unit is just what I ordered. I am even using the packaging it came it to store the unit outside of the MacPro I use it in. Thanks
SATA 1 TB drive February 28, 2010 Maurice (Orcutt, California) I have purchased 4 of these 1 TB drives.
The first one was in 2009, it worked good as my C: drive for about 6 months then started to have reallocated sectors.
Started with one which lasted a few months, move up to 5, then 20 and now 270 so I cloned it and took it out of service. It still passes the Seagate drive test but I don't trust it. Seagate has been very good at replacing defective drives. I had one replaced a couple of years ago.
The other 3 were purchased in 2010 and are still running OK. Very fast drives.
I might give WD a try for my next drive as they have a model that has a 5 year warranty too.
